Smith, George (1870 - 1934)

George Smith RSA (1870 - 1934). Born Mid Calder, Midlothian, died Edinburgh. Painter of oil on landscapes and animal subjects, especially scenes involving working horses. Educated at George Watsons College, studied art at Board of Manufacturers School, Edinburgh and Antwerp under Verlat. His paintings had charm, capturing the spirit of the heavy horses as they worked on farms and under dappled sunlight in woodlands. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (5), the Royal Scottish Academy (128), the Royal Hibernian Academy (3), the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (87), the Aberdeen Artists Society between 1896 and 1931 and also at the Liverpool Galleries (3).
