Robert Gibb, RSA (1845-1932)
Gibb is largely known for his military and historical paintings which brought him fame overseas. He was compared amongst the great historical French artists. His intellect and knowledge of his subjects allowed the detail required in his paintings. Gibbs style is very romantic and he was able to communicate a captivating scene through detail and movement. His earlier paintings indicated an earnest approach to historical scenes often of a tragic nature while his later work shows him in a more romantic light. Elected ARSA 1878, RSA 1882. Exhibited RSA from 1867 . Represented in the Edinburgh City Collection.
