This great Victorian artist was born in London and died in London, and although he was not Scottish his main inspiration for his work came from his visits to the Highlands. He had many associations with the leading figures of Britain - Queen Victoria and Sir Walter Scott, to name the most prolific. His first visit in 1824 was to Sir Walter Scott. Scott is quoted to have said that Landseer's dogs were, "the most magnificent things I have seen .
